I have windows xp home edition - following a power cut windows does not open
correctly and only sometimes opens properly after rebooting several times -
most of the time the opening sequences repeat and repeat; is there a default
or resetting procedure to ensure successful opening?

Power outages can cause:

1. Software corruption (drivers, operating system, etc.) and/or
2. Physical damage to the hardware.

For software problems, you can try:

1. If you can get into Safe Mode (repeatedly tap F8 as the computer is
starting up and then use the Arrow keys to select Safe Mode), then do:
Start>Run>sfc /scannow [enter]

This will run the System File Checker. Have your XP install disk handy.

2. If that doesn't work or you can't get into Safe Mode, try selecting
"Last Known Good Configuration" from that same F8 menu.

3. If that doesn't work, you may need to run Chkdsk *if* you have your
data files already backed up.

If you can't get into Safe Mode, you may need to run Chkdsk from the
Recovery Console:

4. If none of that works, you may try a Repair Install:

For hardware problems, here are general troubleshooting steps:

After you get this resolved, purchase an Uninterruptible Power Supply.
For a home user, this means a UPS that costs around $60.
