The simple Sound Recorder (%SystemRoot%\system32\sndrec32.exe) used to have
menu entries for recording from the output line. Now they are gone and I am
unable to take nifty little sounds from apps. I am fairly certian this
happened as a result of a windows update. I also recall many years ago on
Win98 that I on another computer could use Sounr Recorded that way untill an
'update' turned it off.

What MS does seems sneaky.

Does any one know how to get the menu items back. I am competant enough to
edit the registry.

Mine is still there.

Start > Run > Type: sndrec32 > Click OK

Does the Sound Recorder open?

Do a Search on your machine for sndrec32.exe.

or
Get it off your Windows XP CD: Add/Remove programs > Add/Remove Windows
Components (left pane) > On the Windows Component Wizard box under Component
be sure that there is a check mark is present beside Accessories and
Utilities > Click Next

Thanks Rey,

Specifically in the sound recorder there is under the edit menu an item
called Audio properties. This brings up another form, with the middle
portion titled Sound recording, and before the change the Default device had
a choice for line out, in addition to Line in/Mic in.

Now that box only offers the one choice. And does so even after a system
restore to a time before the menu item disappearance.

I also followed your procedure, but I get the same cripled Sound recorder.

Do you have the extra menu item for line in? If so I would like to ask
some questions about your registry, or what ever parameters sndrec32 might be
accessing that could knock out the old menu item.

Under Sound recording, click on Volume.
It should show under Record level selections.

It opens up the volumn controls. On those controls, also accessable from
the volumn icon, the line out section has been made insensitive. They show
as greyed out, and niether the left right ballence or level control responds
to mouse action.

Does any one know where the information for causing that insensitivity comes
from?
