i have xp home edition, but recently it has started skipping(jumping), both on media player, and the net. i'mm on a network so have to be pretty careful for virus's etc, but i've run norton, ad-aware, and spy-sweeper to gett rid of stuff, aswell as defraging all drives, the only problem is i'm on a laptop, with small hard drive, which doesnt have a huge amount of space left, could this be causing it?

Empting your cache regularly will help, in IE, tools, Internet Options, delete files.

I recently encountered an issue on a friends PC that
involved the Windows XP Media player version 9 and the
Spy Sweeper (Version 2.6.1) by Webroot. This is when the
spy sweeper is installed and running in the background
under Processes and playing audio files in WMP you will
notice the skipping and jumping of the songs until you
shutdown Spy Sweeper and it will cease. Trust me this will work!
