I have been having problems with a PC in my office. It looked as though it
got a 'project1' virus. My virus scan did not work. I tried to use the
system recovery console, but it is asking me for a password that doesn't
exist. Then I tried the Automated System Recovery. This didn't work because
I have no backup disks. I tried reinstalling Windows, thinking it woul
repair the infected file. NOPE. Now whe I boot I can see things normally
but I cannot access any file or the start menu. Is there any way for me to
get to these virus' and delete them from the DOS menu? I have no idea what
commands to use. I am really trying to avaoid reformatting because there are
numerous files I need to get off the PC. Please help I getting extremely
frustrated. Thank you

Have you gone to a site like Symantec's and entering the name of the
virus? They will provide you with instructions for removing the virus,
and if you need a special tool a link to it.

Thank you. I will try that, but do you think that it will be a fix via DOS
command? I can access anything on the PC itself.

To hunt your problem in DOS-mode only is out of my league, one has to know
darn well what to do. Did you try the Recovery method? For that you must have
the original Windows XP Setup CD-Rom or the Recovery CD-Rom from your
retailer. Put the CD-Rom in your CD-Rom drive and reboot. When prompted in
the black screen (hit Enter or Space whatever), boot from the CD-Rom. This
will end up in a blue screen with three choices, hit the "R".
After that you'll end up in a black screen with a DOS prompt. Here you can
at any time type "exit" and the machine will reboot. But before that, type
the following commands end hit "Enter" after each command.

FIXBOOT

FIXMBR

SYSTEMROOT

These commands have repared three very essential system files and hopefully
your system will be able to boot in a normal manner, at least in safe mode.
If that doesn't work eather and you have acces to another PC (as you have I
believe) go to the website http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html and look
around there. Pay special attention to the prog HijackThis - v 1.99.1. But
there are more progs there that can deal with the kind of problems you have.
If in that way you still can't resolve the issue, it will be the end of the
line for me. Best of luck!.

Try burning a copy of the free Ultimate Boot Disk to CD:

http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/

This bootable CD runs DOS and some DOS-based tools, including several virus
scanners.

You can make the CD in any PC and then use it in any other PC.

Quickly get a good backup and recovery program, like Acronis True Image
version 8. Make an image to an external USB disk. Make a new image once a
month or after a major software (or hardware) upgrade. Keep several images.
Occassionally, burn an image to CD(s) or DVD(s). I suggest first saving the
image on disk, then copying to optial media. That seems more reliable.

Next, look for an I386 folder under C:\WINDOWS. If you have one, make a
Bart's bootable CD, which is better than the XP recovery console in a number
of ways:

Also, download a copy of XP setup diskettes. This multi-floppy set can run
the XP recovery console, without an XP CD:

Finally, think about downloading KNOPPIX, a LINUX-distribution that runs
from a CD (or DVD). Although by default KNOPPIX does not write to the hard
drive, you can change that to make some types of repairs. KNOPPIX is a big
download and comes in ISO format. You must have software with an option
like "burn from image" to make it into a CD/DVD. Nero and ast CD Creator
can both do this:

Fabulous! However, I can't get the program to boot from disk, and I cannot
access anything accept the CMD in windows. Eveything is hosed. Do you what
command I can put in to run the program from the CMD window? I can sccess
the disk but I far as how to get the program to run, I am lost. Thanks a
million!!

Ok, so I have figured out that the reason I can never access anything when
booted is because Explorer.exe is not responding. I can boot in any mode
(safe or normal) with explorer resonding. Any suggestions? I cannot get the
UBCD to start on boot. I.E. It will not boot from CD. I am getting
frustrated!! I would just reformat, but there are a few files I need to get
off it.
