Windows Services Error on Boot?

Whenever I boot up my computer into vista I get an error saying windows
services has encountered an error and must close (services.exe) Now I cannot
see anything when I view a folder. For example, if i click on My Computer, it
is simply a blank window. If I click on any folder, it simply just shows an
empty window. This is quite a problem because I cannot view any files even
though they do clearly exist. Assistance would be MUCH appreciated.

If this is a fairly recent issue, you might try using System Restore to take
you back to a time prior to when this began.

If you don't have a restore point that goes back far enough, under
Administrative Tools on the Start Menu is something called event viewer.
Check the System and Applications tabs for any warnings.

The next step, would be to check device manager to see if any of your
hardware shows red or yellow warnings and to update drivers for that device
by checking the device manufacturer's website. If there are no warnings,
check all manufacturer websites for drivers later than what youare currently
running.

Failing that, you can try a repair install of Vista. You would boot from
the Vista CD and one of the installation options you should see at the setup
screen is an option to repair your Vista installation.

Just disregard the MVP in my last post ID, I am not an MVP at this time.

In my start menu I cannot expand the groups to click on anything. Even things
like control panel and my documents won't show up. All I see are blank
windows. I don't think I can get to system restore. Additionally any game,
video I attempt to play has all of a sudden started playing at abnormally
slow rates. I have not had an issue before hand since I bought vista 2 months
ago. I have the home premium upgrade addition, can I still do the repair
procedure? What would you suggest if that doesn't work either?

Right now, I suggest trying the repair install as I outlined. Put the disk
in the drive, shutdown, boot the system cold and when you get to the setup
screen, there should be an option to do a repair.

If that doesn't work, you'll likely have to start over. If this is a
standard disk, even an upgrade, I believe it is bootable.

I tried to to go through the repair procedure. The program said that there
was no error detected on the computer. Also I have no system restore points.
Also I have a new problem, my windows defender won't turn back on. It in fact
turns off automatically. Is it possible to just reinstall windows. I'm not
sure what's wrong, but I think it has to do with service.exe that always
errors and closes out when the computer starts.

I don't know what's causing the issue with Service.exe, though, from what
you describe, it sounds as though some service that is trying to start when
Vista starts is causing the error. Running it down requires the ability to
get to things you can't seem to reach.

As far as I know, you cannot simply reinstall Vista over itself, at least
not without losing your current setup. You might want to check the
following site that has some options but at this point, I'm not sure there
is anything left to you but a new install:

Boot in safe mode (press F8 during startup) then try going into event viewer
and see if you can't see which service is causing you grief (should be under
the system log).

Services.exe is basically a shell for the various services installed on your
computer (which are either programs that run in the background or device
drivers installed for the various pieces of hardware you have installed).
svchost is another such program.

Performing a repair should have replaced that file with a fresh copy
(assuming it was somehow corrupt or otherwise had been replaced).

Try booting in safe mode as I suggested an see if you're able to boot
without issue and see which service is causing the problem.

Once you determine which service it is, you may be able to go into the
services control panel applet and temporarily disable the service until you
can correct the problem.
