I am apparently, like many other PC users, having trouble
if I download the Windows updates. Every time I down
load updates the system crashes and costs me a fortune in
the repair shop. My technicians and others I have spoken
with encounter this problem with the downloads often but
have no problems when updates are installed via CD. I
have been told by some techs that SP2 for XP Home is due
out shortly according to advice from Microsoft, yet when
I contacted Microsoft they said they have no indication
of a release date.

With so many updates isn't it about time Microsoft
released SP2? Perhaps there are more problems with XP
than they can rectify

Personally I see no need for SP2 and most likely will not install it EVER.
My system works great as it is.

The current forecast for the release of SP2 for Windows XP is sometime
in the 3rd quarter of the year 2004 (next year).

I don't see how SP2 is going to that particular situation. Once it's out you
will be back to Auto-Update again!

Besides, it's too soon. WinXP will have a good run, I hope, and with Windows
Update it shouldn't need a second SP until sometime in 2005. The ETA is 3/4
2004.

If you have trouble with Auto-Update way then watch the security bulletins
and download appropriate updates *manually*. There are so many this sounds a
pain to me, and I need not say that clearly it would require diligence of
you. With the help of a utility called Qchain available from Microsoft this
may not be as bad as it sounds. Qchain enables you do do a slew of updates
all at once with need for only one reboot.

And make sure your virus scanner is up to date.

I would think that SP2 would come out 1 QT 2004. I already have 16 Hotfixes
marked SP2.

Current thinking appears to be next summer. I think it more likely that
they do not have *that* many updates, and are wanting to get everything
out into a single further SP2 before really moving into the next round
of the system - for (probably) 2005
