windows says it's closing down - then doesnt ?

running xp media edition - when i go to restart or shutdown - the system gets
to the "windows is closing down" screen then just sits there and i have to
power the system off then on again ? any thoughts as to why and can it be
sorted ?

When pc is running, press ctrl+alt+del and look at processes and
applications, possibly you have some malware running in the background,
i would do a spyscan and an antivirus scan. You can try press
ctrl+alt+del when its hanging on the shutdown screen to, you may find
it will tell you what program is causing the problem there.
