Thanks for the feedback. The issue is that while this screen displays on the monitor, I am unable to input any information (keystrokes, mouse interaction, etc.). It seems perpetually "stuck" at this screen and beeping the whole time. Am I overlooking the solution

You'll need the recovery console to fix this, that is, you will need
the Windows XP CD.

Start your computer from CD-ROM, and make sure that you select the
drive that contains the Windows XP installation CD-ROM.
In the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, select R for repair, and
then press Enter.
Select the installation number for the problem installation.
Type the password for the administrator account of that installation,
and then press Enter (It may be that no administrator password was
used, if so just press Enter)
You receive a drive:WINDOWS> prompt, where drive is the drive on which
Windows XP is installed.

Use this command:

(Assuming D is the letter assigned to the CD ROM)
cd D:
cd i386
expand ntkrnlmp.ex_ X:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe

(where X is the letter of the drive where windows is installed)

Good luck

Hi brentRCDD,

Roger:
Thanks for the help. I think I'm on th eright track, but I can't seem to "control" the recovery console.

After I insert the Restore CD and boot up, I receive a console that ask if I (1) want to restore WinXP, or (2) Boot to command Prompt from CD-ROM.

Regardless of what I select, it seems as though it inputs choice #2. It also doesn't respond to my input strokes from the keyboard (everything is connected).

after the #2 selection is made, the following display appears:
A:\>

Once this appears, nothing else is able to be input onto the screen

Brent

Have you tried changing keyboards, if you have one spare?
Also, do you have the XP CD or is it an OEM CD?

I'll tell you how it goes with me, and you tell me if there are
differences:
I boot up from CD. It asks me to press any letter, then there's a blue
screen, indicating it is loading up drivers. It takes a while ( > 1
min) to load these, among which there are those for SCSI, etc.

Then a blue screen appears asking to type R for recovery or ENTER for
a new installation.
I type R, it takes me to a DOS-like screen, asks me for the number of
the installation I want to repair and the administrator password.

From what you tell me, it appears you have a non-standard XP CD, maybe
a OEM recovey disk. If so, they might have instructions either in the
manual or in their website about how to access the recovery console.

Good luck

I have this ame problem how can it be solved HELP! email (e-mail address removed) as soon as possible.

I have this morning experienced the same problem... has anyone found
'cure' yet

Geetings,

Thats a crucial Windows file...

Try a Repair install -

Boot from the XP CD,
do NOT choose the first Repair (with Console)
instead, continue further until it searches for previous Windows -
then, if it DOES find a previous Windows, chose the REPAIR on it.

That is the standard way of fixing the OS without changing files or
settings.

BEWARE - your XP CD may not be exactly like above - so CAREFULLY read each
screen as you go, do NOT proceed to OVERWRITE the old Windows.
