windows patch info

a little while ago I recieved a window popped up about
windows patch.info.. I paid 19.95 for it to download a
fix for the problem. But it did not give me a order
number and I did not see anything happening. What does
this mean?? Did I just pay for something or gave away my
credit card number to microsoft's windows-patch.info???

Afraid to say you may have been 'done'. Microsoft never charges for
patches or security upgrades and they certainly don't arrive via 'pop-
up' windows. I would give your system a good scan with your anti virus
utility if I were you - just in case!

I'm afraid to have to inform you that what you saw was a scam -- all Windows "patches" are
available on WindowsUpdate (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) for free. I would advise you
to call your credit card company (or however you paid for it) to possibly cancel and reissue
you a new card (not to mention issue a chargeback for the $20).

I certainly hope Microsoft is going after this assmunch.
I just received the popup on an XP install all of 10 minutes old on a
new cablemodem connection:
