If you've forgot your password, how can you by-pass it? Hopefully,
without re-installing windows?

Either log into another admin account and remove it from User Accounts
or: Boot into safe mode and remove it from the System Admin account.

How to boot into Safe Mode:

You need to hit F8 during boot, just after the BIOS info switches to black
screen. Or...

Go to Start/Run/Msconfig. Boot.Ini and check off /SafeBoot. Apply/Ok,
reboot.
Note: Before leaving safe mode, revert.

Simply log in using the built-in Administrator account (which
cannot be deleted) and use Start > Run > "control userpasswords2" to
modify the desired account(s). By design, the only way to log into the
Administrator account of WinXP Home is to reboot into Safe Mode. For
WinXP Pro, pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the Welcome Screen will
produce the standard login dialog box.

Failing that, Linux-based password cracking utilities abound on the
Internet, freely available to anyone who can use Google.

running "control userpasswords2" didn't seem to work. I'm logged on, but
want to password protect this computer. When I tried to enter a password,
user accounts asked for an old password, which I have forgotten.

I entered a new one (usng "control userpasswords2", but when testing it by
attempting to change THAT one, I'm told the old password is no good.

Go to http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ . There you will find
zip files that will let you create boot floppy disks or bootable CDs
that will enable you to reset any system password on an NT class
operating system (XP is an NT class operating system).

What if you forgot the Administrator password?
