Hopefully an easy question for someone. What type of file does Windows
XP use to store the uninstalled pieces of the operating system? Thanks
for any thoughts.

What "uninstalled pieces of the operating system" are you thinking of?

Look on your Windows XP CD.

"... store the uninstalled pieces of the operating system? ..."

Uninstalled pieces of the operating system?

- Do you mean "not yet installed"?
- Or do you mean "installed and then later removed"?

Either way - they are on the installation media - the CD that came with your
machine and/or the i386 directory your OEM gave you to install from, etc.
If it has not been installed/has been removed from the OS - you have to
install it from scratch.

Add/Remove Programs control panel --> Add/Remove Windows Components.

What, exactly is the issue or problem?
