Text error- letters gone missing

I have recently created a word document, saved it, then realised that there
were several mistakes that I had made in the grammar that the computer didnt
pick up on. So, i opened it again, and tried to change a few of the words so
that they said exactly what I meant to say, like for example "there to
they're". However, when I tried to add the apostrophe in, instead of moving
everything else along and squeezing it into the existing word, it deleted the
character in front of it to compensate for the additional character. This
meant that I was left with, in the end, a sentence that instead of having "
they're " had " they' ", which I wasnt intending on. What has gone wrong
here? This happens to my computer frequently, so any advice would be greatly
appreciated on how to solve it.

You're in overtype mode, which is toggled on and off by pressing the Insert
key. Press it again to get back to insert mode.

You can tell which mode you're in (in Word 2003 and earlier) by looking at
the letters OVR on the status bar at the bottom of the window. If they're
gray, you're in insert mode; if they're black, you're in overtype mode. You
can also toggle between modes by double-clicking those letters.

In Word 2007, you can right-click the status bar and choose whether to
display the overtype indicator.
