Greetings,

I'm running windows 2000...or used to!

After returning from a short holiday my PC won't boot up. When I tried
for the first time it gave me the message: "Cannot load windows kernel",
and since that I get nothing on the screen, not even a bios message.

My computer was on for the holiday.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Since you got the "cannot load windows kernel" error, assuming the
subsequent failure is related, my guess is it's not your video card.
Since you get nothing on the screen, it's probably not your hard
disk drive. Check to see whether your power supply fan is running.
If not, I would leave it off and maybe replace the power supply.

If you know how to do BIOS settings, maybe try replacing the
battery, I think they are common large coin types. If you have the
means, measure its voltage, it should be about three volts (if
possible, measure before removing it).

Maybe someone can swap parts to see what is failing. If you don't
have a backup of important files, be sure to protect the HDD.

Others might have better advice. Good luck.

Are you saying that you can't boot into BIOS? have you tried booting
directly into BIOS?

Please list full details about your hardware, and your software
environment (antivirus, for example).

May I know why (what were you running while you were gone?), and
furthermore did you noticed anything else amiss (funny smell or noise)?

Off the top of my head it sounds like a hardware failure - motherboard
failure, perhaps. Leaking/exploding capacitors is a common problem
lately. Still, we don't have enough info yet to really understand your
problem.

I second the motherboard caps problem. Check the board first.
