Hi,
I am having an issue with 2 of my networked computers, one a win2k(A) and
the other xp Pro (B). I can see A from B , but I "am not allowed access" or
some junk like that, and can not see B at all from A. Both are connected with
a router which automatically assigns IP addresses. I can ping them from each
other as well and router sees both. Both have no issues accessing the
internet provided by the router.

Anyone out there now what going on?

Cheers

2 seperate issues, most likely.

The fact that you can access the Internet via the router indicates that the
basic TCP/IP configuration is OK.

Item 1: 'Access Denied' attempting to connect to win2k from XP

( BTW, ""am not allowed access" or some junk like that" is not really good
enough. The exact error message contains valuable information which can
help identify the problem. )

This is most likely a permissions problem.
The username XP is supplying to win2k is not recognised by the win2k box.
Simplest solution is to set up the same user name and password on both
machines.

If you can't do that for some reason, then do this instead:
On XP, go to Windows Explorer, Tools, Map Network Drive.
Map any spare drive letter to \\win200box\sharename, but...
Choose the option to 'Connect using a different username'.
Enter a username which is valid on the win2k box, in the format:
win2kbox_name\Username
along with the matching password.

The drive should map, and the credentials will be cached.
You should now be able to browse the machine, too.

Item 2: XP machine not visible on the network

This is most likely a firewall issue.
If you have XP-SP2, go into the Windows Firewall options, exceptions tab,
and enable the F+P Sharing exception.
If you have a pre-SP2 version of XP, then the firewall is called Internet
Connection Firewall. Disable it on the LAN connection.

Message when going from the XP into the 2k:
The network path is not found, pls contact your system administrator.
This win2k computer is visible on other XP computers on the network with the
same message.

I cannot map a network drive with another password. It claims that the
username is not found so I checked it and it does exist and the password is
correct.

Any other leads?

Thanks
