Try upgrading to Zone Alarm 7.0.337 (the latest release). It's far superior
to ZA 6.

I realize this doesn't exactly answer your question on how to prevent msmsgs
from loading. It can start up from many different places.

Using the last version 6 of ZoneAlarm Pro, in XP Home Edition w/SP2.
Problem arises when using DriveImage 7.0 to backup the XP partition. About
2/3s the way through, a ZA message pops up. Says the msmsgs.exe is
attempting to monitor user. This may include keyboard strokes, mouse
movements/clicks etc. I have the option to allow or deny. If I don't
choose either, DI 7.0's image verification process always completes as okay.
If I choose either to allow or deny msmsgs.exe to do whatever, the image
verification always fails.

Can some kind soul post a link on how to prevent msmsgs.exe from loading?

it is a component that
can be uninstalled via
a/r programs > windows components.

afterwards you may want
to delete the messenger folder
in program files.

then you will want to search
for a msmsgr rootkit
just in case one was installed.

Go to your Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services OR click
on Start > Run and type "services.msc" (without the quotes) into the
window and then hit Enter.

Scroll down the list to "Messenger" and right click on it and select
Properties. In the Start-up Type drop down list select "Disable".
Then OK your way out and then re-boot your computer if it doesn't
prompt you to do so.

That should take care of Messenger. HTH

Please expound on the "superiority" contention.

The update found by ZA 6 is a version 7.0 free edition. I have still 120
days of ZA support in my subscription. I don't want to buy the 7.0 pro
version for now. At least until the support time runs out.

No problems until last few months. Guessing its related to an MS critical
update. I tried, by means of msconfig, to remove all the startup items in
the system tray. ZA Pro, NAV, and TrendMicro antispyware don't load. Same
results. Just no message from ZA, DI still fails image verification. Which
makes no sense to me. mscntfy.exe is active per taskmanager when I do the
msconfig thing noted. Attempt removal with taskmanager, and another
instance is noted in system tray. The other instance doesn't go away.

MS messenger icon is not loaded in system tray. No hidden ones either.

No mention of Windows messenger in the location you stated for OE. I use OE
for newsgroup reading only.
