I am running Windows XP and would be grateful if someone could tell me how I
can stop this programme from starting when I switch on my laptop.
Many thanks

Hi Adrian,

With Windows Messenger Open, click on the tools/Options menu item, then
click the preferences tab. In the general section at the top you should see
a tick box that says 'Run this program when windows starts' - untick it.

That seemed to fix my problems with Messenger running - until I started
using Outlook Express as a newsreader! I can't remember which tweak/util I
used at the time to prevent Messenger from loading when Outlook Express did,
but you can google for them quite easily if you're having the same problem
that I had.

Here is one I found from the Elder Geek website:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/prevent_messenger_from_running_in_outlook_express.htm

Prevent Messenger from Running In Outlook Express
This tweak is but one of the many ways to stop Windows Messenger from running.

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Modify/Create the Value Name according to the Value Data listed below.
Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value] // Value Name: Hide Messenger
Value Data: [2 = Messenger Will Not Load]
Exit Registry and Reboot

If you are using outlook express and have applied the tweak, you should also
tell Outlook Express not to try logging on to messenger.

1. Open Outlook Express
2. Click on tool, options
3. Click on the general tab
4. Uncheck "automatically log on to windows messenger"

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Brian
