windows messenger 5

i'm using win messenger 4.7.2009 in win xp home edition.
i was wondering if upgrading to windows messenger 5 would

1. let the integrity of messenger with oe6 remain.
2. notify me about new emails in hotmail.
3. show me newier smilies or emoticons of msn version 6
if sent by users of msn 6/6.1.
4. if it will show then whether they will be animanted or
only plain ones.

thanks for reply Kay. but this sucks! what is the use of
the upgrade then? one more things. i came to know that
msn 6.1 has its latest version 6.1.0203. i downloaded
from ms website. the initial sub version of 6.1 was 4.72
mbs and his one turned out to be a whooping 7mbs! and
after installing there was no change whatsoever! what is
the difference?

Hi N,

The upgrade has several other added features, including support for UPnP-enabled file
transfers, Tablet PC digital ink support, support for Live Communications Server 2003 support
and Exchange 2000 IM support (which was a separate Exchange version previously).

If you wish to have the MSN functionality, you'll have to use either MSN Messenger (as you've
already done) or continue to use Windows Messenger 4.7 (with the Add-In).

The 7MB version just includes the Windows Installer installation files (for Windows versions
which do not come with the Windows Installer, like Windows XP), there is no other difference
between the setup files and in the Messenger version(s) that are installed with the different
setup files.

hello kay,
but in both cases the setup process was the same! in the
previous 4 mbversion (6.1.0105)everything installed
smoothly. i'm using win xp home edition by the way. in
this 8mb version also the set up was same. its just that
as it was 6.1.0203 i went forward to download it.

comment on the above and also tell me the link from where
i should download any future installitions without any
compabaility issuew with xp. the .0105 version i
downloaded was from msn and this .0203 is from
microsoft.com the latter versions download page has a
normal ms download window whereas the former had the
dedicated page to messenger. i think the former download
link was http//:messenger.msn.com.

Yes, to the end user, the install looks exactly the same, as I said, Windows XP comes with
the Windows Installer, so it completely skips installing that part.

All versions will *always* work with XP, and http://messenger.msn.com is the main download
source. No need to worry about any compatibility problems, it'll work regardless =).
