Windows Media Player and Sound - Please help!

After working perfectly fine up until yesterday, my music suddenly could not
be played through windows media player and kept coming up with "! error".
Today I have no music files at all on my computer. What has happened? Is it
because I have only just got it connected with the Internet? But I've run
virus checks with nothing detected.
And why is my computer not making any sound now at all, be it through own
speakers or stereo? Please help someone! Thanks
