I have bought the software. I have the restore disks for compaq, but since
I replaced the hard drive with a larger one they won 't work.

Bear in mind that compaq have a reputation for non-standard / customised
windows installation disks. These work just fine on the hardware they were
designed to match but may cause problems if installed to other hardware -
"standard" drivers missing, etc.

Look for Windows/Options/Install. If that directory exists, it contains all
the files you need to create an installation disk. I also bought a Compaq
with ME on it. I burned all the files in that directory to a CD, and it
works perfectly to do a fresh install.

Yes. Don't use it. The worst sytem ever devised by MS.

"by MS" is overkill. The sentence works better without those two
words.

There's a program that fixes what's wrong with ME - it's called
"format".

Hi there!

You can copy any ME-CD and use it with your number you have.

Check the version of the CD. OEM or Retail.

If you have (AFAIK, like Win95) a number with -OEM- in the middle, you
should find a CD with a serialnumber with xxx-OEM-xxxxxxx.

You should not take a Copy from a Fileserver like Donkey, or so. So far
I know, they are all full of Bugs, Spy, adwaere etc. Make a Copy from a
original CD, or take a original CD. You serial should work with any
(oem or retail) CD, also german versions etc.

Beg to differ with you all. I use ME and have done so for the last three
years in fact. Even special ordered it on this computer instead of XP
because I hate "product activation". I have tweaked it into totally
submission. It's very well behaved on my computer, and frankly, other
than having System Restore is pretty much identical to W98SE. That is,
except that it doesn't suffer from the well documented problem that
W98SE has with IE6, that is that when you close a folder in Windows
Explorer, it reopens of its own accord. You then reclose the folder and
it stays reclosed. THAT'S a real PITA for people. That ME doesn't allow
easy access to Real Mode DOS is no longer an issue for me either because
I've implemented workarounds.

Hey, opinions are like hemorroids... sooner or later every a**hole has
'em and I'm no different. 80)>

I use ME as a second OS to XP and find it faster and more versatile
(although not as pretty) than XP.
If you bother to read a few pages here and there about how it does things,
ME can be put under user control fairly quickly.

I have to agree with John. I've had Win95, 98 and ME and WinME was the
most stable until I switched to XP.

I have got to agree with you John.

I had the same experience. I can't believe that this far down the road
people are still repeating those old wives tales.

ME did have problems with certain hardware congurations. I found that most
of the blame went to the absolute crap version of IE 5.5 that shipped with
it. I run 2000 now, but still dual boot ME to run older DOS programs and
games.
