I currently have Windows ME on my system. I just purchased Windows XP (on the net). When I received XP Home Edition, is states on the box, for PC's without windows, or PC's with Windows 95 or earlier
I know there was an upgrade version to go from windows ME to XP. I purchased the full XP Home Edition as I was concerned that piggy backing may be a problem
Can I proceed to instal the XP Home Addition

You can install your XP Home as a clean install without doing an
upgrade. You can't upgrade from Windows 95 to XP. Your box is telling
you that you have a full version (not upgrade version) of XP.

David;
The full version is fully capable of performing an upgrade or Clean
Installation.
This will work fine which ever route you choose.

Yes - that is a retail full copy (rather than the upgrade - which would
still do a clean install with a little persuasion). Read Gary
Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

Then run the CD from the ME system and take Install, continuing with
Upgrade. Only do a clean install if this does not work out - it will
probably be fine with those simple precautions
