I posted earlier asking whether the original Windows ME CD
is required when installing XP using the Upgrade version.

I got different replies - one saying that I can do a clean
install out of the running ME environment and thus not
requiring the original ME CD for verification.
My conputer is a Compaq so it came with Windows ME pre-
installed (OEM Product Key) but without a CD.

Can somebody please confirm that it works if I buy the
Upgrade version and then do a clean install within ME thus
not requiring a CD for verification

thx a lot.

In order to perform a "clean install" using the "upgrade version"
of Windows XP, you'll need an actual Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME
installation CD to insert in the CD drive when requested to do so
during setup. If you do not have one of those CDs, then you'll need
a "full version" of Windows XP in order to perform a "clean install".

So what do people do who have OEM ME installation without
a CD - buy the full version of XP home although they are
eligable for an upgrade version?

That's just not fair.

You can still do the upgrade which is what you pay for. If you have any
Windows 9X/Me CD's, you can do a clean install. As long as the original Me
license is not used anywhere else, it doesn't matter what qualifying media
is used to facilitate the setup.
