I'd like to do a clean install of XP Home using the
Upgrade version. However I can't find my original Windows
ME CD so I was wondering whether the authentication label
on my Compaq PC will be sufficient (entering the number
during the installation process)

Spida,

You need to have the ME CD handy to put in the computer for the
authentication process.

During the installation phase, you'll need the actual Windows ME CD.
An old Window 95 or 98 installation CD will also suffice.

Greetings --

The WinMe Product Key won't help; you must have the actual CD to
prove upgrade eligibility of the qualifying OS is not installed.

If all you have is an OEM Recovery CD for the earlier OS, or the
OS is installed and you have no CD, you can start the upgrade from
within the current Win98/Me/NT/2K installation, and still elect to
perform a clean installation, to include formatting the drive. In
this case, there's no further request for the qualifying OS's
installation CD, because the installation routing "remembers" that you
started from within the qualifying OS. This process is more
time-consuming, but you get the same results: a clean installation of
WinXP.
