Hi! I was wondering what exactly is the difference between
the Windows XP professional Upgrade for $199 and the
Windows XP professional for $299? I want to upgrade from
Windows Me to Windows XP professional but not sure which
one to get. I have to upgrade in order to take online
classes. Also, what software comes with it because I need
MS Office XP Professional and MS Power Point. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The $199 version is an upgrade version and needs to have a previous version
of windows cd during install for proof that you are eligible to use the
cheaper upgrade version. If you have an actual ME cd then get the upgrade
version.
The $299 version is the full version. If you have no previous version of
windows on cd then you need the full version.

XP is an operating system and does not come with programs like MS Office XP.
You will have to purchase Office.

I would say they are same, its just that you cannot install Windows XP
Upgrade on a system which does not have a qualifying pre-requisite product
(like Win ME)already installed.

Also, MS Office and MS PowerPoint (which is a part of MS Office) are not
included with Windows XP (either upgrade or full version) - you need to buy
them separately.

Get the upgrade. The only difference between the two is that the
install routine in the Upgrade version looks for evidence of a
qualifying product before it proceeds. The end result on your computer
is the same in either case.

The software they contain is identical. The only difference is
that you must own a copy of a previous qualifying version of
Windows to use the Upgrade version. If you own a copy of Me, you
qualify for the Upgrade, and that's what you should buy, since
it's significantly less expensive.

Neither of these come with it, nor does any other significant
application software. No version of Windows has ever come with
significant application software. If you need Office Professional
(which includes PowerPoint), you have to buy it separately.

Could you tell me if it matters whether the Windows 98SE CD that you
feed into the machine (to prove you qualify for the upgrade edition) is
*itself* an upgrade edition?

I'm intending to upgrade my kids machine to XP Professional, and I want
to know if a Windows 98 upgrade CD will suffice as a qualifying product.

The actual installation will be a "clean install".

Thanks.

Yes, it will.

The Upgrade setup makes a check when it is run for evidence of a
qualifying product, that qualifies for a discount. Your ME is such a
product - you do not need to buy the Full version. There is no other
difference

To upgrade, first Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm and then run the Upgrade CD
from the ME.

If you wanted a clean install of the XP from the upgrade disk (and I
would not do so until I had tried the upgrade), you can either show
setup the retail ME CD when asked; or if you only have an OEM 'restore'
one, by starting as for an upgrade, but taking New Install instead; then
when asked where, hit ESC , delete the present partition and make a new
RAW one to be formatted next - by that time the check has been made
