Windows ME on D Drive - XP on C Drive: Conflict?

I have Windows ME on my D drive and XPon my C drive. I no longer use ME but
it is there by default. I now have certain hardware problems e.g. printer no
longer works, speakers no longer work. I understand these hardware problems
may result from a conflict between the 2 operating systems. Can anyone
validate this and suggest a way of resolving this conflict?

The obvious way seems to backup and format the D drive but perhaps someone
has an alternative.

Having the two operating systems on separate drives WILL NOT cause any kind
of hardware conflict. How could they?

A Hewlett Packard call assistant told me as much when I was trying to get my
printer working after putting in the C drive with XP on it. I do not
understand why there should be a conflict, they could not explain that to me.
I assumed that a support assistant, albeit HP, knows more than me.
