Windows Mail - where is mail stored?

i had to reinstall windows vista and all my mail is gone. where is the mail
stored? and can i retrieve it?

If you did a clean install, and formatted the disk, then they are gone.
If you installed Vista over top of the existing install, then they may still
be there.
C:\Users\(your account)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

Did you do a backup?

i did a backup and can find the file, but can't seem to figure out how to get
them back into windows mail. the file is WindowsMail.MSMessageStore.

Instead of C:\Users\... look for C:\Windows.old\Users\...

That file is only the index file. The email messages are stored in .eml
files.
I believe there are also folder files. They are all normally hidden files.

I'm not familiar with the method of getting them back into Windows Mail,
but I'd try by clicking File, then Import, then Messages.

That's just the database that keeps track of the messages..
The messages are .eml files..
