Windows mail sending (IMAP) but not receiving (SMTP)

I finally got my imap to receive just fine (I unchecked the secure password
box). But it will not send. (outgoing port 587 with ssl on both)

I set it up the same way with Outlook 2003 and it sends there fine. Just not
Windows Mail. Is there another security setting or something I could try?

I have tried with my antivirus turned off and still no go.

I have gone to tools...options and dropped the security settings to internet
and still no go.

What antivirus programs do you have? Some of them need to be uninstalled,
not just disabled, to stop them from causing problems in Windows Mail.

Have you asked your email provider (who is probably also your internet
provider) for their instructions for setting up to use their email servers?
If they haven't written instructions for Windows Mail yet, use their
instructions for Outlook Express but under Windows Mail instead. The
instructions are probably somewhere on their web site. Or, you could tell
us who your email provider is and see if anyone here already knows where
to find the instructions.

You could also show us the entire error messages you get if any when
trying to receive messages.

CA Security center and I only have the anti-virus installed.
Yes I have been in contact with them. They tried it and it would not work
either for them. I hope they come back with an answer but thought I would try
here. After reading these types of posts al afternoon I never did see it get
fixed and since my problem is sending only and not yahoo or hotmail or
gmail....thought I would post.

Subject 'windows mail', Acount: 'Lamar', Server: 'cardinal.lamar.edu',
Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC19

thank you for any advice, not counting uninstalling the anti-virus. Not
ready to do that at this time.

I also have a problem along these lines. My ISP is Earthlink. My ISP is
compatible with XP but not Vista, so I have to use Windows Mail instead of
the ISP's own email. I can send messages fine. However, when others send me
messages, I get the messages, but the senders get the bounceback message
"system administrator: undeliverable re: (contents of subject line)." I
have taken off the Norton and McAfee antivirus programs I had on the computer
and that didn't help. Then I replaced the antivirus programs with the Avast
program and that didn't help either. Is there anything I can do to fix the
situation other than switching to XP or trying to find an ISP that has its
own email ready for Vista?

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

Looks like the settings 'treelemons' needs are here:
http://mss.lamar.edu/imapconfig.pdf

Although the SMTP server settings show port 25, I would
try it with port 587 first, but do not enable SSL.
The error message shows SSL enabled, which is not appropriate.
Port 25 will cause problems due to the port 25 block policy
while off-campus.

The bounce notices are not generated by Windows Mail, but by
a mail server. Without seeing the complete bounce notice, I can't
tell if it came from the EarthLink server or the sender's server.

OK, I am not staff or worker there, I am a graduate student and do not use
their servers; students use a different server.

Regardless, all this reminded me that my ISP RR does not alway sallow
sending through them using a different server...so I went in and changed the
outgoing server to use my roadrunner one with my roadrunner credentials and
now Windows Mail works fine, sending and receiving. I have no clue what this
should be, since it worked with Outlook 2003, but not with Windows Mail...but
I am happy now.

Glad to hear you got it working properly.
It is always best to use one's ISP SMTP server, except on a laptop
when away from home, but that is a whole 'nother topic.
