does anyone know how to disable the dialog box that prompts one for their
username and password every time the mail program is opened?

Click on Tools, then Accounts, then your email account, then Properties,
then Servers. Make sure your username and password are entered, even
if your password is shown as just dots. If there's no check mark in the
box before Remember Password, click on this box. Don't click on Apply -
it erases your password. Click on OK and then Close.
