i have windows mail on vista .its worked great for a year or so but now its
asking me for my username and password and i don't have a clue what it could
be . any ideas?

You don't know the username and password for your mail account?
You will need to contact your mail provider.

If you know for sure that you are entering the correct username and
password, one possible cause for that error is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a possible quick fix is to delete that
corrupted mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that
account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

In the future, when posting here, you either need to quote the message
you are replying to, or else start a new message thread, detailing your
specific issue. Just posting a "me too" doesn't cut it.

This might be (or might not be) part of the confusion.

At least in the version of OE mail that I was using several years ago, the
password that you used to log onto your email server could be different than
the one that you used to log into the user OE UserID that used this same
email server.

Not sure if this is the case in Vista Mail or not.
