I bought this computer, my first with Vista. Windows Mail worked perfectly
for two weeks, then suddenly stopped sending, without me changing anything to
my knowledge. It stopped filtering spam as well but that is less serious.
Receiving is still fine. Can anyone help?

Paul.

What happens when you try to send mail?

Is mail piling up in the Outbox?

If so , download and install this fix, with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works
in other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit
version or the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain
common antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton
or McAfee, or a recent one from Trend, are likely to cause this
problem again, although not immediately, so if you have any of
those, remember where to find the fix since you're likely to need
it again.

Will he "ever" get an answer? I'm sure he will in due time.
When you posted, it had only been one hour and 14 minutes since he posted.
The volunteers who man this forum sometimes have to stop for food and
sleep...
I know, it's so selfish of them!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. To take the questions asked:

There are no error mesages when I try to send. The tasks window only shows
the receiving mail task and not the send mail task. I used Norton AV for a
while but it was only installed after the problem arose and I uninstalled it
later. Neither change made any difference.

Mail is piling up in the outbox, but I haven't tried to send many. I have
had to resort to webmail to send essential messages.

Sorry about the blank reply - I couldn't find the right place to type.

If the patch isn't sufficient, you may need to click Tools, then Accounts,
then your email account, then Remove. Then restart Windows Mail and
create the email account again. This can remove more of what the
antivirus program left behind.

I was so pleased to get my sending facility bach that I forgot about the spam
filtering [[most messages coloured red. Will I have to do the re-insall to
correct this?

Paul.

I don't know. You might click Tools, then Junk E-mail Options, then look
around to see if it looks messed up.

You're welcome. And thanks for the feedback.

Same here. Installed/uninstalled Norton; ran the hotfix, did a little dance,
booted, rebooted, unrebooted. Rolled down Windows, rolled up Windows. The
mail remains unsent. This appears to be, IMHO, a Microsoft Vista/Outlook
problem, not Norton's, not McAfee's, not my great Aunt Martha's. It does
remain alas, also MY problem 'cause the mail on my computer languishes in the
Outbox. I will patiently stand by for the definitive, unapologetic patch
from Microsoft after sufficient lapse of days and public outcry. Rant off.

If you have not done so already, delete your corrupted email account,
restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

I did what you suggest, but it doesn't look messed up. I've actually decided
it isn't worth worrying about, but thanks for all your help.

best wishes, Paul
