smokescreen

Folks,

I've read most of the threads on this that talk about Norton AV being the
problem. However I'm experiencing the same problem - unable to download or
open attachments in Windows Mail - and I've never had Norton AV installed on
my notebook. Have checked the settings in options and nothing should prevent
attachments downloading - so anyone got any suggestions.

Appreciate any help that you can provide, Thanks

Its not just Norton (though, they are the worst offender), its ANY and ALL
Antivirus/Antispam applications when they are set to scan email. If you
have ANY flavor of Antivirus/Antispam software on this machine AND its set
to scan email, disable the scanning feature (you may have to uninstall the
program and do a custom re-install without the scanning module) and see if
the problem persists.

So, if not Norton, which AV are you using? Do you get an error message?
What happens when someone sends you an attachment, do you get the
email with the attachment missing? What happens when you send an
attachment to yourself?

Are the attachments executable? There's a setting somewhere that will
prevent messages that could potentially contain a virus.

FOlks - thanks for the responses. I'm not in fact running ANY AV software
yet. First thing I did was clean off Norton. Got Defender and Windows
Firewall on the go but that's it for now. Will look into AVAST later.

However - it looks like the problem was conflict between Office 2007 trial
and XP Pro which I'd installed pending arrival of the Office 2007 upgrade
software. Having uninstalled Office Trial, problem goes away as I can now use
Outlook XP again.

Thanks for your input. Much appreciated.

Outlook XP (a.k.a Outlook 2002) is not fully Vista compatible, and it can
cause problems with Vista's Windows Contacts.
