How much do you like switching to new programs?

Windows Live Mail helps if you need to connect to a web-based news
server. Microsoft is probably going to switch most of its support for
Vista mail programs from Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail.
But if Windows Mail works well enough for you, like it does for me,
I don't see any need to switch yet.

I am finding that WLM is a pain in the butt and I am thinking of reverting
back to either Windows Mail or maybe even changing the whole shooting match
back to WinXP. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks,

Tom

If you uninstall WLM, you will find WM still there but in hiding. You can
ask others here for how to make it appear again and how to transfer any
saved messages.

Going back to WinXP is harder - not enough of it was saved when you
went to Vista to recover from, so you'll have to do a new install of it
from the original CD's or DVD's. It's possible, though.

Uninstalling WLM should bring the WM shortcuts back.

If your PC originally came with XP, you should be able to go
back, but if it came with Vista, you may have difficulty finding
the manufacturer's XP drivers for the various motherboard
features (onboard sound, video, etc.).

Windows Mail is still there in your Program Files folder. Going back to
WinXP involves reformatting the drive and installing WinXP from scratch.
There are other free alternatives such as Thunderbird, but I honestly prefer
Windows Mail.

Actually gentlemen, I am mainly asking if my emails could be reconstituted
in OE under XP. My computer came with Vista and I have just about given up
on it. I am finding it such a pain that I am thinking of installing a new
hard disk in my Vaio laptop and installing a clean version of XP on it if I
can find the correct drivers for the hardware. But, I can't do without all
my emails from the last 6 months since I got this laptop. I understand Vista
mail is a different file structure than OE and XP so I am just wondering if
it's possible to go backwards and get them in OE again.

Thanks,

Tom

You can export then as .eml messages in Windows Mail, which OE will
import. I don't know about messages in Windows Live Mail.

Yes. I view WM as the toy in the Cracker Jack box. It's just a basic
utility thrown in the box.
Seeing as MS has the Office Suite (Outlook) it makes sense for them to
dumb-down the free utility.
Perhaps they felt that they made OE too good, and not enough users were
buying Outlook?

WLM seems to be a better toy <g>. I think it's worth it. Things just seem
to work better in it. It's been updated a couple of times in the past year,
whereas WM hasn't been. I haven't seen the complaints about auto-complete,
messages getting stuck, etc. like I see re WM.
The biggest difference is that WLM has Inboxes and other folders for each
email account you add. So, if you have a lot of accounts, there's a bunch
of folders. But it does have the Quickviews, which lets you see all Inbox,
all news, etc. at once.

The nice thing about WLM is that it doesn't require a total
commitment. Try it out, and if you don't like it, uninstall, and
WM is back as your default email program.
