thanks for viewing my question.

how do i move an xp License to a new machine.
i built a new box, with new hdd and want to transfer xp pro to this computer.
do i need to reregister, and will ms let me move it to the new computer.

You do not move the license to the new PC.

If you have a Retail verrsion of XP, you can officially re-install XP and
re-activate it. You then need to "format" to old PC to get rid of that
installation.

If you have an OEM version of Xp (pre-installed), you can not "officially"
move it to the new PC. The OEM license "ties" it to the original PC
forever! Also, if the version is an OEM from Dell, HP or others, you can
even get it to work on the new Ps, unless the new unit is the same model.

There is no "de-activation" process, as such.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not legitimately
transferable), simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on
and then install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most
likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
