Windows is shutting down ...screen freezes

Windows XP, never had a problem, diligent about virus
scanning and keeping a clean system. Just upgraded memory
yesterday:256 to 512. Now I click on Start, Shut down,
then the Windows shutting down screen appears...then
freezes.
Any suggestions on why and how I can fix.
