Windows is doing crazy things

When I click on the shutdown button in the login screen, the text shows

up but not the pictures. I can not click on any button in the shutdown
screen. In an account it will show up, but to see the desktop I have to

go into the task manager. I then have to click new task and start
"C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe" I can then see what should be there. Does
this have anything to do with a virus?

I would try 2 things. After shutting down all programs, I would use the power
button on the CPU to shut it down. After waiting 30 seconds start it up
again, this might help to reset your computer. (Computers left on all the
time start doing strange things, a simple shutdown usually fixes the problem.)
If that has no effect run a virus and spyware scan.

The best way to determine if your computer is clean is to scan for
viruses and malware. Here are general directions:

Please don't generalize like that by saying "computers". Computers running
Windoze tend to do strange things if they are left running too long between
boots. Computers running real operating systems, like Linux or BSD or
Solaris can run for months and in some cases have been run years between
boots without any ill effects.

My typical uptimes go as long as a power failure doesn't bring the box down.
One Linux server that I have running here presently has the following
uptime ...

System Uptime: 29 days, 7 hours, 20 minutes

and that's the last time the hydro went off bringing down the system. :-)

That's nothing. There's a Netware 3.12 server that has a documented
uptime in excess of six years!

"According to Novell’s “Cool Solutions” Web site, as of Nov. 10 the
champion server (a NetWare 3.12 box) had been up for 2,263 days, 3
hours, 47 minutes, and 59 seconds. That’s more than six years without a
reboot!"
