I recently connected a computer running Windows XP to the
Internet and it was upgraded to the latest service pack
(1a). Since the the Windows Installer fails when I attempt
to install any new software. I reinstalled XP Proffesional
from my MSDN CD and the problem still persists. Is there a
method to reinstall the installer short of wiping the hard
drive and starting over. It worked fine prior to the
service pack installation.

Thanks Bill Ebert

You might first try opening ADM. in control-panel,services
scroll down to windows installer, start service.By opening
event viewer(or create a short-cut to my docs.)you can
see the result.Also,go to run,type:cmd
At the prompt type:Sfc /Scannow Then install XP cd,when
the bar graph is thru,remove cd,type:CHKDSK C: /F
Agree to restart, then type:EXIT Restart computer.
