Hope you can help -

It seems that Windows Installer is not operating
correctly. Anytime an executible is launced to install
an app it hangs, no error messages - it just sits there

Is there anyway to repair the Windows Installer in WinXP?

It seems to me that the LanDesk application that was
installed end of last year may have something to do with
Windows XP's Installer issues...

Please help

Alex;

Maybe one of these will help with the Windows Installer problem.

The Windows Installer service could not be accessed' on Windows XP?
When you attempt to install a program that uses Windows Installer, such as
Office XP, you receive:
============================

"The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you
are running in safe
mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. "
This error is probably the result of a damaged registration service.

To resolve this issue:
1. Open a CMD.EXE prompt.
2. Type msiexec /unregister and press Enter.
3. Type msiexec /regserver and press Enter.
that is it .. As frustrating as it was it should be fixed now
=======================

Error 1719, 'The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed'?

When you run an MSI package, you receive:

Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. You may be
running in Safe mode or Windows Installer may not be correctly installed.

To fix this problem:

1. Use the Registry Editor to navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer

2. Double-click the ImagePath Value Name, a REG_EXPAND_SZ data type, and
verify that the data string is %SystemRoot%\System32\msiexec.exe /V, where
%SystemRoot% is the location of your OS, like C:\Winnt or C:\Windows.

3. Shutdown and restart in Safe mode by pressing F8 when the boot menu
displays.

4. After you log on, run msiexec /regserver.

5. Shutdown and restart normally.
============================

Maybe the Windows Installer service is disabled on the machine. From the
Start menu select Run and type "services.msc". Double-click on the service
named "Windows Installer". Check the value in the 'Startup type:' field. If
it's currently set to "Disabled", then this is the problem. Change it by
selecting "Manual" from the drop-down box.

I did run the cmd line option to /unregister the service,
however, the service will not reregister using
the /regserver option...

What next???

Alex;

Yea, I tried that myself. Don't worry, it probably didn't unregister
either.

Try to start the Windows Installer Service.
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click: Windows Installer |
Is it started? | If not | Startup type: | Set to: Manual |
Apply | Click the Start button | Did it Start?

I was finally able to /unregister and /regserver

However, it still hangs at "Preparing to Install"
which is the first dialogue box that pops up...

I haven't been able to install any app using the Windows
Installer... will using R to repair XP fix issue?

I went through the services and realized that the Windows
Installer is not starting, tried to start it and i get the
following error message:

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or
control request in a timely fashion.

I know it's dependant on RPC and that started ok

Please help

Besides using th R option for repair, if that is

I also have the same problem. When I try to start the service
manually, it can not start "Error5: access is denied". I have tried
all the other tips given in this thread and am close to despair.

Any other suggestions warmly welcomed!

Richard;

Sounds like a permission problem.

Are you an Administrator?

Ok, I'm having the problem where I'm told windows installer isn't installed correctly. I checked, and it is registered properly, so I tried to uninstall it using the instructions here

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q31534

cmd starts up with the command line at C:\Doccuments and Settings\*username*> and nothing changes when I enter attrib -r -s -h c:\windows\system32\dllcache (all the proper names for my file locations). What do I need to do? It does say in User Profiles that I'm a Computer Administrator
