Windows Installer Update

Microsoft's latest Windows Update is their new Windows Installer
3.1...."The additional features in version 3.1 help make creating,
distributing, and managing updates to applications easier and more
efficient."

I install most of MS's updates. My only concern with this update is
that I don't want to install anything that will make it easier for
Microsoft to update my system with SP2 without my permission...or
keep nagging me to do it.

Has anyone installed this update?

I installed 3.1 Installer yesterday .
Those things that Microsoft update without your knowledge are helps for any
applications you may have installed on your computer . To my knowledge
Microsoft has never added anything to my computer that has not been to assist
an application I've installed .
There was a time when I had the jumpers on the harddrives in my
computer incorrectly configured and Microsoft could have installed something
to help the computer from damaging itself , but I don't think they download
anything else even if they did install something onto my computer .
You get to make the choices yourself from the Windows Update site .
If you are as aware that you notice something installed onto your computer
you do not want you can just as easily uninstall it . You probably have junk
in your computer system left there from programs you've installed from
surfing anyway . I notice all sorts of remains of programs and from a program
I installed a month ago that Windows hasn't deleted yet , but eventually
Windows will delete leftovers........I think .
Don't worry about it , it's good for the computer is my impression of
that idea that Microsoft installs stuff onto your computer without your
knowledge or consent .
That's my opinion too I guess . Microsoft isn't there to harm the
computing system , it wants a safe environment , secure so it will not have
to face lawsuits from people who spread rumours like the rumour that
Microsoft installs damaging software onto peoples computers .
Nah , Microsofts the good guy , trust them , but not with your life .

My advise is to wait a few more weeks to install it.I have read a few posts
of
people having some problems after installing it.

SP2 setup process requires user input to accept the EULA (license agreement). Without your input, it cannot proceed.
Also, SP2 will not auto-start the setup process --- the user has to respond with the screen prompts --- and that's true for either Automatic Updates (unless you have all notifies turned off) or by going to Windows Update website.

Curious: why are you holding back on applying SP2?

As to the Installer package, many people have already applied it. Some have had problems getting a good completion, but have gotten help to finish the task.
Setting aside service packs, your system will need Windows Installer for other purposes.

If you are on service pack 1, get service pack 2 before getting this update.

Do a liitle reading before getting SP2. See tips at Aumha.org on preparing for SP2.

I had no problem installing SP1, but there have been many bad installs
of SP2 reported (somewhere around 10%, I believe)...so I'm waiting awhile
before upgrading. I've heard that SP2 can mess up one's network settings,
and since I have Win 95, 98, and XP all working together well on my
Linksys wireless router, I don't want to jeapordize that right now. I
know I will eventually upgrade to SP2. I just don't want the hassles
right now.

Per your suggestion, I will hold off on the Installer package until SP2
is finally installed.

The key is to run a good, up to date anti-virus and two or more anti-spyware
programs before installing SP2. SP2 causes problems when installed on
infected machines. BTW, even though it's still a beta, I like the Microsoft
Anti-spyware program.

I'm running Norton 2002 AV on my XP desktop and notebook. Is this older
version likely to present a problem for SP2? As for anti-spyware, I use
Ad Aware and Counter Spy religiously.

At this point I would not trust anything before 2004.
AVG7 is free at www.grisoft.com
Make sure you update every one of whatever you're going to run and then run
in Safe Mode.
