Windows installer problem..

I've just did a spring-cleaning by formatting my C-drive and
reinstalling WinXP-pro.
I've installed some applications but since yesterday I get the
following error message when trying to install any applications:
"The Windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur
when you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows installer
is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for
assistance."

I'm logged in as administrator when this happens so it couldn't be a
permissions problem..

Has anyone got any tips on how to solve this?

Start > Run > "services.msc" (without the quotes); Check the status of
Windows installer...change it to automatic if it is not set to it already.
