I reinstalled windows xp. however I have 2 hard disks c
and d. I did a quick format not being aware that my
second hard drive was being formated. Once system was
restarted all my personal files have been lost.how can i
restore those files/

If you formatted your drive, all files have been permanently erased.
Therefore, unless you performed a backup of your files, they are gone.

he did a quick format which just wipes out the pointers to the files.
depending on the file system, there may be tools available to help him
restore the file tables.

i havent looked into tools to help in this regard in a long time. what file
system was the hard drive you wiped out? fat32 or ntfs? you havent done
anything with the harddrive since you formatted it, right? written no
files, partitioned, etc?
basically i'm going to have to search google to find a tool, i'd recommend
you do the same unless someone is more familiar with the current tools out
there.

first thing i found was recommendations for this tool (about $79) -
GetDataBack - comes in FAT and NTFS versions
http://www.runtime.org/

heres another $$$ program someone recommends
http://www.lc-tech.com/filerecovery.htm

another $$$ one (not finding anything free)
http://www.pccertify.com/products/repo2000.htm

i've used none of this so cant give you anything other than this.
