I have put a new hard drive in my computer. I was having a problem with the
old one not being read correctly by windows. I tried to partition and format
ntfs and the format is failing. I had a similar problem 10 months ago and I
had Microsoft send me a new disc and it worked. I am wondering if MS doesnt
put some kind of time limit on there free stuff. Anyhow has anyone else had
this issue? Am I missing something. its a 200gb hard drive and I have tried
splitting the partition as well. By the way it wont quick format either. All
connections are secure, I put new ide cable in it. Is it possible the ata
port on the motherboard is bad??

It is more probable that the motherboard is bad and/or the RAM is bad
than that the XP CD is bad.

The most difficult time a PC will have with input/output is when loading
windows. Failing to properly read the install cd, for whatever the reason,
only compounds the situation.
You can only quick format if the hard drive has been fully formatted a prior
time with the same partition intact. Use NTFS option for the partition(s).
