My desktop icons changed this AM, there is a border/shading around them and
the font is inside a text box instead of floating. I was pasting a photo to
the desktop at the time and can't get it back to the original display. Is
there a way to set my desktop back to a default display?

Hello R

Not sure what you mean by "pasting a photo to the desktop", but that may
be the cause of your icon trouble.

There are four "conditions" that might stop you from getting the
transparent look. Check the following:

[1] Turn the drop shadows box ON (Control Panel > System Properties >
Advanced > Performance Settings > Visual Effects).

[2] Right-click on the desktop and point to Arrange Icons By. Make sure
Lock Web Items on Desktop is UN-checked.

[3] Go to Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web tab and make sure
both checkboxes are clear. If not, uncheck them.

[4] Be sure that the wallpaper you have set is a graphic file such as
..bmp or .jpg, and not an .html file (try using one of the standard
Windows wallpapers first).

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks for the info, ran through your sugestions and believe the issue is
with numbe 3 and 4. To elaborate on what happend to cause this:
I had an image in a word doc that I wanted to edit. I could not acces it in the word doc (with the editing program I wanted) so with the I copied the image from the word document and pasted it to my desk top, thinking it was a jpeg. I think the image actually pasted as a web page. I confess that a window did appear, but like an idiot I clicked away. The image pasted did not appear as my background but as a file.

when open up the web tab as in suggestion 3, one box is checked
file///C:domue~1/Rick?locals~1/Temp/msohtml1/01/clip_image002.jpeg
I uncheck but when I reopen it, it is checked again, I have tried deleting
it as well and it returns when I reopen the desktop. The other box on in the
web tab "my current home page" remains unchecked.

Any ideas?
