I have just downloaded the new version of this tool from the microsoft update
site. I have choosen to disable this tool as is my right as the administrator
of my personal computer. However, even though it states the this tool is
managed by the administrator....ME..... I don't have access to it. I did have
access to it yesterday but not after I updated today. Why is this and how
can I get access back to enable or disable the add-on as I please.... Or even
delete it.... I am using a genuine copy of XP home that came with the machine
when i bought it.... I should be able to have the right to choose what
add-ons I do and do not want to have enabled.... Regards Mark.

I have deleted the file "legitcheckcontrol.dll" now I can even get
updates.....I am not impressed that I need to have a file on my system that
hands out information without me being able to decide if I want it or not....
this was not in any agreement that I signed up to..... WGA could be disabled
in the past now I can't even delet it easily let alone disable it...Mark

Open xp as admistraror and change settings as needed.Administrators and
the adminstrator are diffrent....

I only have one username on this machine. and it is listed as the
administrator. The only other username is the guest logon which I beleive I
can't delete. Unless there is another way to open XP as administrator that I
don't know about......Mark

I think you may have created a big problem by deleting the
"legitcheckcontrol.dll", but try logging in by following the information
from the link below.

Carey, how rude you are to assume that I am an idiot. Do you think I have not
looked at FAQ pages and the why validate pages....... I have a genuine copy
of XP. I have validated it.....it PASSED..... I want to be able to DISABLE or
ENABLE the tool as I see fit....as the ADMINISTRATOR......as it states in the
manage add-on drop down."This add-on is managed by your adminstrator.... I
have loged on through Safe mode as the administrator and it did not change
anything. I deleted the "legitcheckcontrol.dll" it made no difference ...I
reinstalled the WGA... I still can't disable it.....WHY CAN"T I DISABLE THIS
ADD-ON????...... It is a simple question..... to just send me a link to a
common FAQ page without even attempting to solve my problem or ask me any
clarifying questions is the height of rudness.....do you assume I am a
criminal and have an illegal copy of XP?????? Please just answer my
query..... if you can't then pass me to someone that can and don't waste my
time.....Mark.

It can't be deleted. You have to live with it. Welcome to the world of
MS Control.

You don't need to use Microsoft/Windows/Automatic Updates to install the
numerous security patches for Windows. In fact, it is counter-intuitive
to additional unnecessary code to update your software, as it only add
more thing that can and will go wrong with the patching process.

He is right Carey, its still there,,,,,, what are you trying to do to me....
Furthermore you still have not answered my original question. WGA states that
the adminitrator has the power to disable this tool.....I am the
administrator and yet I cannot disable it.... Why am I being treated like an
idiot.....Carey please transfer me to a supervisor.... may be he can give me
a common sense answer....Mark

The procedure I suggested earlier worked on one of my
other computers perfectly. Try the following:

Mark,

If you think that you are talking to an employee at Microsoft, you are
WRONG. This is a peer to peer newsgroup, and with your rotten
attitude, it's a wonder you get any answer. These people are doing
this on their own time. How about some respect, or is that above you?

But he did get the WRONG answer, no matter who it is from.

What's he supposed to say? Thank you for wasting my time!

Thank you Kurttrail. However yes I did think that... so I apoligise for my
incorrect assumption. having said that I still have not got an answer
for my original question....can I or can I not disable WGA????? its not that
difficult a question.....
I did do as Carey instructed. and all was well until I went to the update
page, and with out downloading or installing anything. I checked the addons
and there it was as large as life and still not able to be disabled....

Mark

If you removed the WGA ActiveX control, then the only way
to prevent its reinstallation is to set your computer to install
Windows Updates automatically and not manually visit the
Windows Update web site.
