Windows frozen on startup, unless power cable unplugged and replugged

I sometimes have power cuts in my area. When I start
Windows xp again, at the login screen (Cntrl-Alt-Del) the
system is non-responsive to the keyboard. However, if I
unplug the power cable and replug it in, then the pc works
fine.

I saw something about a feature in XP that tries
to 'remember' your settings in order to do a faster boot-
up. I think that is causing this problem, but I can't
find any way to change this setting.

Can anyone help me?

XP is trying to recover from the power cut. What you need is an
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS.) These are widely available and can be
quite inexpensive. A good place to start is American Power Corporation:
www.apcc.com. Use their UPS selector.

Ok. Thanks Rocky. I'll get a UPS....will save some grief. Out of interest, do you know how to switch off the feature of XP trying to recover from a power cut

XP's ability to recover from failures that crippled earlier versions of
Windows is not only an integral part of the operating system, it's one of
its great advantages! Instead of hacking at the OS, just get a UPS. You'll
be glad you did. And because a UPS includes a surge protector, you'll have
double protection. Many UPSes come with free software that will save your
work and shut down your system gracefully in the event of a power failure -
even if you're away from the computer. My last tip: As inexpensive as these
things are to begin with, they are also widely discounted. So don't pay full
price (;->
