Windows freezing on screensaver activation

My system is locking up when the screensaver tries to
activate. I end up with a black screen with an hour
glass that will not move when I move my mouse and I have
to restart the computer in order to re-logon....

Anyone know whats up?
 
If there is any sound associated with the screen saver, update Windows Media
Player.

open control panel >administrative tools >event viewer
-here you look for application error logs
also open system information >tools >Dr.Watson
here:-
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\user.dmp

Have you updated video driver/BIOS as well as DirectX?
