I have a new Sony computer with Windows XP Media Edition
preinstalled (I don't have a disk), with all the latest
upgrades installed. Never before had problems with Windows
ME, 98, 95, 3.1 and even DOS (yes, that's how old I am).
But this version can't remember that I joint the Workgroup
Administrator (for Access XP), forgets that I prefer
Listings vs. Icons in the explorer, sometimes can't
remember Passwords it promised to remember, and disables
my modem in standby mode. Is there something I can do
beside losing my mind? All the built-in help functions,
and the Microsoft support site aren't of much help (if one
can dig through all of these). These problems really impair
my productivity.
Thanks for some tips.

This fix applies to Outlook and other programs that store passwords
in the Protected Storage System Provider sub-branch of the Registry.
It also corrects some issues with Internet Explorer and Autocomplete.

Thanks Carey; your advice with a previous problem (Norton issue) was very
helpful. My problem this time, however, is a bit different. First to the
modem: The Power Management was unchecked, and the issue with the modem (my
second modem) seems to be that the modem doesn't get a dialtone when the
computer was in standby mode. Also, at times, the modem tells me it hung up,
but actually didn't. At times, I have to manually unplug the modem to
restart it; and this is a replacement modem since the first one did this all
the time.
More importantly, why does Windows not recognize when I joint the Workgroup
Administrator, even though it said it did.
The password problem is not my login in Outlook, but when I go to a secure
site, and Windows asked whether to remember my password. I say yes, but it
doesn't -- it used to before I downloaded the latest updates.
Finally, why doesn't Windows remember that I prefer to see lists vs. icons
in the Explorer. I have to manually change this every time I go to Windows
Explorer.
Any ideas? Something I'm doing wrong.
Thanks.
Brigitte P.
