Is there any way of removing the Windows Firewall? Everything else with SP2
can stay, but Windows Firewall arbitrarily turns itself on about once a week
at inconvenient times, like just before a download and says the download may
not work properly because of this.I've had this problem before but have now
gotten disgusted with it's actions. It's like a kid you don't pay attention
to and they keep bugging you until you slap them.

No, it can't be removed. Perhaps you can disable it in services?

Windows Firewall blocks unsolicited connection requests that come in
from the Internet. It doesn't block connections that you request, and
I don't know of anything in Windows Firewall that can prevent
downloads. What is the complete and exact text of the message?

Could the message be coming from a different firewall: Norton, McAfee,
PC-cillin, ZoneAlarm, etc? Note that recent versions of some
antivirus programs include firewall features.

It shouldn't do that, are you sure some other service that depends on it
isn't starting it? In services you should be able to set disable (if set
manual another program can launch it).

No, although it can be disabled, quite easily.

WinXP's built-in firewall is a "stateful" firewall, which means that it
will *not* block any download that has been initiated by your computer;
it will block only unsolicited inbound connections.

Your problem lies elsewhere.
