Every time my Win XP Home PC starts up, a message appears telling me that the
Windows Firewall is switched off, which indeed it is, and I have to switch it
on.
I am using a long established dial-up connection.
I have completed virus and anti spyware scans using Norton and Spysweeper
4.56 and in all other espects my PC behaves fine. It has no other indication
of infection.

Any ideas please? - Martin

Do you have another software firewall which disables Windows Firewall ,Norton
Internet Security has and you might also have disabled it.

Scan with these :

@ Ad-Aware SE Personal
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware

@ Microsoft Antispyware (only for people with genuie-legal Windows )
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

@ SpyBot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/microsoft.en.html

Make sure they are updated and perform full scans. If some of them finds an
infection ,boot in Safe Mode and scan.

Use SpyBot S&D's command line scanning

Then ,when you install it and update it ,do that :

Boot in Safe Mode with command prompt
Do this by repeatedly typing F8 while Windows is starting before
Windows logo appears.
Then you'll open the BIOS menu where you can choose to boot
the hard drive in SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT

then type the following :
cd\ [ENTER]
cd "Program files" [ENTER]
cd "Spybot - Search & Destroy" [ENTER]

then you will have opened this:
C:\Program files\Spybot - Search & Destroy"

now type the following and the scan will start
spybotsd.exe /autocheck /autofix

!!! N.B.
[ENTER] means that you have to hit ENTER button on the keyboard
Also note that there is a space between the commands

Also scan with:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Panda Software free Active Scan, where you can check your
PC for ALL TYPES of security threats and clean viruses and worms

More detailed instructions can be found here, they are written by me:

At the end ,if no malware is found ,do a System Restore and this may fix the
problem.

System Restore is a special function that allows you return back all your
stuff and settings and that's why it will restore the necessary things if
something goes wrong.

Start- Programs - Accessories- System Tools - System Restore.

Restore your computer to a state 3 days before the problems started

Hi

If you have a 3rd party Firewall running, you can turn that message off:

Control Panel>Security Center - then click on 'Change the way Security
Center alerts me'. Enable/disable the various options on that screen.

Yes, turn the firewall on. That will solve the problem of the message
telling you it's Off....

However, when you switch it on, doesn't it *stay* on? Do you have to switch
it on every time you boot the PC?

I forgot that Norton AV has Internet worm protection which is a mini firewall
and after the scans disable Norton's worm protection and this may solve the
problem

No, just Norton AV, and yes it's up to date.

Andrew,

I appreciate you taking the time to reply but didn't you read my original
post?, particularly the bit where I said "Every time I switch on the PC", and
as for telling me to switch it on....come on....also in the original
post..."and I have to switch it on..."
