Windows Firewall

Hi,
I am using Windows XP Professional. I am sharing a few directories on my
computer, so others can access it's data on a small network. When "Windows
Firewall" is turned on, nobody can access the computer shares. If I turn it
off, everything works well. Is there a way to have some people access the
computer without shutting off the firewall. Also, can I specify the users
that I would like to have access. Thanks.

Hi mitch,

If you are running Windows XP with SP2, then open the Windows Firewall
applet in Control Panel and ensure that "Don't allow exceptions" is
unchecked. Click on the Exceptions tab and click in the checkbox beside
"File and Printer Sharing" to check it, then click on OK.

If you are running pre-SP2 Windows XP, the Firewall is not configurable for
File and Printer Sharing and will block it......the only way to share
files/folders is to disable the Firewall.

For specifying users to have access, if Windows XP is on a drive formatted
for NTFS, then you can specify an Access Control List (ACL) for each of the
shared directories. Have a look at this tutorial by Ron Lowe and Steve
