Windows Firewall will not disable!

I'm having problems with the windows firewall interferring with PCAnywhere
or any other program that I try to use to access the computer. I have
disabled the firewall, however with you run wscui.cpl the firewall still
shows up as active and all the indications that I'm getting suggests that
the firewall is still present. Is there a hack or something that I can do to
disable the firewall other than through the control panel?

Currently the system with Windows XP is set up on a temporary lan with a hub
between the to computers while I troubleshoot this problem. I can connect
from the problem machine into to the other machine without a problem but the
reverse is not true. I used software to monitor the packet traffic and it
show tha the problem machine is ignoring all requests---Just like a firewall
is present! However as I said before the firewall has been diabled or it
should be according to the control panel. Is there something that I'm
missing!?

Things that I have tried as a last resort:
removed PCAnwhere
removed Service pack 2
reinstall Service pack 2
reinstalled PCAnywhere

And I have tried rebooting in every configuration I can think of to get the
firewall to fall!

Any Help would be greatly appreciatied.

Open Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Services, scroll to list
on the right to Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing, select it and
double click, set Startup type to Disabled. That said, if you connect to
the Internet at all, you need some kind of firewall. Unless you are
connecting to the Internet through a router, you almost certainly will
become infected upon going online. This is especially important if you have
a broadband connection as they are always on.

If the above doesn't resolve the issue, please take this question to the
windowsxp.network_web newsgroup.

This did not solve the problem . I'll go to the windowsxp.network_web
newsgroup

Thanks Michael.

Michael,
Just thought I'd let you know what cured the problem. I didn't get any
responses from the other group on this issue so I've been plugging away at
it on my own. Turns out that my mom had Norton AntiVirus 2005 loaded with
the "Internet Worm Protection" turned on! This is also a firewall app and is
the reason that the firewall indicator in Windows Security Service would not
turn off. As soon as I turned off the Internet Worm Protection the firewall
fell like a ton of bricks.

Again thanks for your fast response and help,
Tim

You want to run without a firewall, and compromise your computer, for what
reason?

Which may lead to their computer spewing out garbage to millions of other
unsuspecting individuals!
