I just bought a Nikon digital camera that has wireless capabilities for
transferring images, but I have to turn off the Windows Firewall in order to
connect to my wireless network. A Nikon support-tech told me that I could
add a port in the Firewall exception list, but I would have to call
Microsoft and get help from them on how to do it; well I can't afford to pay
them for help!

Can someone here tell me how to do this, or at least give me a link that
will help?

Thanks all,
Ray

To turn Windows Firewall on or off

You must be logged on to this computer as an administrator to complete this
procedure.

1.. Open Windows Firewall.
2.. On the General tab, click one of the following:
a.. On (recommended). This is the setting that you should normally use.

You can also select the Don't allow exceptions check box. When this
check box is selected, the firewall blocks all unsolicited requests to
connect to your computer, including requests to programs or services
selected on the Exceptions tab. Use this setting when you need maximum
protection for your computer, such as when you connect to a public network
in a hotel or airport, or when a dangerous virus or worm is spreading over
the Internet.

b.. Off (not recommended). Turning off Windows Firewall might make your
computer (and your network, if you have one) more vulnerable to damage from
viruses or unknown intruders.
Warning

a.. If you use the Advanced tab to turn off Windows Firewall for one or
more individual connections, the Windows Security Center will report that
the firewall is off, even though the firewall is still turned on for other
connections. Also, on the General tab, Windows Firewall will still be set to
On.
Notes

a.. To open Windows Firewall, click Start, click Control Panel, and then
double-click Windows Firewall.
b.. Windows Firewall is turned on by default for all Internet and network
connections. However, some computer manufacturers and network administrators
might turn it off.
c.. Windows Firewall is turned on by default, so you cannot use some
features of some types of programs, unless the program is listed on the
Exceptions tab in Windows Firewall. For example, you might not be able to
send photos using an instant messaging program until you add the program to
the exceptions list.

Thanks for the dissertation on what a Firewall is, but nowhere did I see the
word "Port", or how to add one to the Exception list!

You typed "but I have to turn off the Windows Firewall " so I thought that
you first wanted to turn off the firewall. I didn't post a dissertation on
what a firewall is, I posted the information that you seem to have
requested.

I have just searched for "add firewall port" in Help and Support and all the
instructions are there, including mention of exceptions, but I will not copy
them here as you might say that this isn't what you wanted to know.

You can **** OFF in future.

Have you looked at the Windows firewall, yet? Especially the "Exceptions"
tab? And the buttons that say: "Add Program", "Add Port"?

Tom

There is a place in all Firewalls I am familiar with to add trusted
applications so try that.
